After all, it is the relationship between the two leaders that has held the Coalition together, far more than any shared ideology. Mr Clegg’s resilience looks likely to be tested again in Glasgow as activists seek to tie his hands over issues such as Trident, immigration, NHS and welfare reform, fracking, schools and Europe, the outcome of which could be that another deal with the Tories becomes much harder to achieve. Another danger for the Lib Dems is that they look like the serial hagglers of British politics, forever triangulating to stay in office, with no coherent set of values. |
